Remembering Officer Austin Abdelnabi: A Community's Tribute
In a heartfelt ceremony held at Praise Cathedral in Greer, family, friends, and local law enforcement officials gathered to celebrate the life of Officer Austin “Zade” Abdelnabi, an Upstate native who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. On August 17, 2026, his body was returned to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, marking the beginning of a mourning period for the community he called home.
Officer Abdelnabi, a graduate of Blue Ridge High School, earned his degree in criminal justice from Clemson University in 2022. He joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in late 2023 after serving four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he demonstrated bravery during two overseas deployments. His commitment to public service and patriotism resonated deeply within the Upstate community.
A Legacy of Compassion and Bravery
During the emotional service, attendees reflected on Abdelnabi's infectious smile and compassionate nature, traits that endeared him to both colleagues and community members alike. A poignant moment occurred outside the church as attendees witnessed a horse-drawn carriage transporting his casket, a sight that evoked many tears and fond memories.
The community's respect for Abdelnabi extended beyond the funeral as they participated in the 15th annual Upstate South Carolina Law Enforcement Memorial softball tournament. Kara Blackwell of the Greer Police Department emphasized the importance of honoring deceased officers, stating, “We want to honor him the same as we do everyone here in the Upstate.” A moment of silence was observed to genuinely pay tribute to a hero.
Honoring Fallen Heroes and Supporting Their Families
Abdelnabi leaves behind his wife, Sage, as well as his parents and three siblings, a reminder of the personal sacrifices made by law enforcement families. In continuation of honoring fallen heroes, the Upstate community has established a Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, encouraging donations to support the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
This tragedy has underscored the bond between law enforcement and the community they serve. Local residents are encouraged to keep supporting law enforcement initiatives and participate in community events, reinforcing the spirit of remembrance and appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who protect and serve.
