Transforming a Landmark into a Boutique Experience
Big changes are on the horizon for the former Cafe and Then Some site at 101 College St. in downtown Greenville. Aileron Management has proposed an ambitious project that plans to birth a 17-room boutique hotel named The Banter Hotel, along with a restaurant, rooftop bar, and a stylish speakeasy-like club. The design promises a delightful blend of historic charm and modern aesthetic, inspired by the early 20th-century Art Nouveau architecture.
Preserving History While Innovating
The new development pays tribute to its past as a comedy club and car dealership while adding a fresh twist to the local hospitality scene. “We saw an opportunity to fill that niche and add to the fabric of Greenville,” expressed Jason Boehm, the CEO of Aileron Management. The goal is to offer something unparalleled in downtown Greenville—a true boutique experience that highlights local culture and design through Upstate-based architects and firms.
What to Expect from The Banter Hotel
The design, created in collaboration with Spartanburg-based PSi Design, captures the essence of the building’s history while introducing modern amenities. Patrons can look forward to enjoying meals at the restaurant, sipping cocktails at the rooftop bar, and mingling at the intimate speakeasy that nods to the Prohibition era. If approved, the hotel aims to commence operations in the second half of 2027, making it a highly anticipated addition to the city.
Community Impact and Future Expectations
This new boutique hotel represents not just an opportunity for tourism and dining, but is also a beacon of hope for the local economy. With excitement building around the plans, discussions have begun regarding how to best integrate this concept into the community. The upcoming presentation to the city’s Design Review Board is crucial for securing the necessary approvals and moving forward with construction.
Engaging Local Spirit and Culture
Beyond mere architecture, The Banter Hotel is set to be a social hub, revitalizing the neighborhood spirit and fostering community connections. Reflecting on its rich past while looking forward to a promising future, this project embodies the essence of what Greenville stands for—growth, innovation, and respect for history.
